Pitta = Fire + Water
Qualities: hot, sharp, light, liquid.
Signs: In our skin, Pitta shows itself as redness, inflammation like acne, and reactive skin.
Skincare: usually skincare suitable for acne prone skin targets Pitta dosha (inflammation) through opposite ingredients that have cooling and soothing qualities.
Kapha = Earth + Water
Qualities: heavy, slow, smooth, soft, unctuous.
Signs: In our skin, Kapha shows itself as (excess) oil, soft, juicy skin, large open pores and congestion like blackheads.
Skincare: Oil control products target Kapha dosha through ingredients that are light and dry in nature.
Kind of makes sense, doesn’t it?
When one or more of these doshas are imbalanced, their qualities are more pronounced.
And the beauty of the Science of Ayurveda is that it knows how to balance all 3 doshas parallelly.
Mind you: this is not something that was discovered overnight in a lab. The earliest mentions of Ayurveda were recorded about 5000 years ago, so you can imagine the amount of trial-and-error formulations went through before they were finalized to be passed on through generations.
By carefully selecting ingredients that target specific doshas and using them in a perfected proportion, Ayurveda has created formulations for face, body and hair that nurture and balance every dosha - without aggravating another.
Whenever skincare products target a specific skin problem, they often hyper fixate on fixing that one problem, without taking into account the rest of the skin’s wellness.
Since Ayurveda is over 5000 years old, the ingredients that were available weren’t created in labs, but found in nature.

Yes, there is, in fact, a way to activate the benefits of each ingredient in a formulation. Ayurveda discovered this interesting procedure thousands of years ago and prescribes it in the ancient Ayurvedic texts.
Natural skincare products are usually made by just blending the ingredients together.
But science and chemistry teach us that simply blending ingredients doesn’t mean that they’ll actually be effective.
Such synthetic or simply 'natural' skincare products cannot match the potency of traditionally prepared Ayurvedic oils, which ensure maximum efficacy of each ingredient.
Ancient Ayurvedic texts reveal the meticulous process of cooking – yes, cooking – authentic Ayurvedic oils to bring out each herb's maximum efficacy:
Herbs like manjistha, turmeric, saffron, lotus etc are sustainably wildcrafted from their natural habitat, where they have the richest soil for optimal nutrition. Herbs should be certified pesticide-free and quality checked for heavy metals etc.
Herbs are washed and dried multiple times, then pounded into a powder.
Depending on the properties of the herbs, they're either made into:
- a 'Kalka' which is a thick paste with the powdered herbs
- or a 'Kashaya' which is a liquid concoction with the pounded herbs.
A base oil (eg. sesame) is heated and boiled at supervised & safe temperatures. High precision is required to ensure the oil does not burn. The Kalka and Kashaya (paste and liquid concoction) is stirred into the boiling oil, and kept at a very specific temperature that's constantly monitored. The oils is then allowed to cool naturally, and strained with a cloth.
The Ayurvedic texts prescribe exactly how long and at which temperature each formulation should be made.
Only highly skilled artisans with the right equipment can bring such an oil to successful completion.
An authentic, effective Ayurvedic formulation will implement Ayurvedic principles such as “like increases like” as an ingredient-selection criterion. (Remember the doshas and their imbalances we talked about earlier?)
This entire process makes these oils super potent and powerful. Ordinary creams and serums are no match for such a potent, traditional ancient formulation.

Manjistha
