Easily preventable yet easy to overlook – if there was ever a phrase that could suitably capture the essence of all the surprisingly common mistakes we all make when it comes to skincare, it’s this.
Whether it’s overusing harsh exfoliators or sebum-stripping cleansers, or ’skincare sins’ such as forgetting, or even ignoring sunscreen or moisturiser altogether!
Mistakes like these can not only lead to acne, clogged pores, irritation, dullness and dryness, but can also contribute to premature ageing and damage the skin’s overall health.
And some of you may be thinking whether there’s any point to this at all, especially since you have been making these mistakes for several years if not decades already? Well, fear not. It's never too late to course-correct!
So, sit back, get comfy (ideally with a pot of herbal tea and some calming music) and learn how not to repeat these basic skincare mistakes ever again!
1. Stop overusing harsh cleansers or exfoliating products that strip down the skin barrier!
Instead of framing it in complex terms, let’s understand what the skin barrier is through this simple analogy:
Imagine a brick wall, with each individual skin cell as one brick. It is all held together by some sort of mortar – cement, or concrete or some combination thereof. This mortar that holds each individual cell in place is your skin barrier. It is made of nutritive compounds like ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol.
Now here are some common bad habits you may have picked up that damage it –
1. Excessive exfoliation
2. Over cleansing
3. Using products that don’t suit your skin type
All of us know how important it is to keep our skin clean and exfoliated. Yet there is such a thing as doing it too much. But how much is too much? Well, it depends on the kind of stressors – dirt, grime, smoke and other pollutants your skin gets routinely exposed to.
A great thumb rule is washing your face twice a day with gentle, non-stripping cleansers. 2. Not sharing some of that love and care that you exclusively reserve for your face with your body!
Now, first off – Just like the changing of seasons, human life undergoes several natural phases. Our philosophy as a beauty and wellness brand considers ageing, or Jara (aka ’Vardhakya’), as a natural and beautiful aspect of life.

Dryness, or dehydrated skin; sagginess, or loss of elasticity; thinning, or loss of volume, and others. Regular body lotions are considered a skincare staple for good reason here. But most lotions and moisturisers bought off-the-shelf are sticky, gloopy and comedogenic - i.e. they block pores.

As such, protecting your skin from artificial blue light is crucial. Always consider putting on sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF even if you do not have to step out at all during daytime.
Now, sure sunscreen offers protection for your skin from sun damage and harsh light in general but what do you do about the extra-delicate skin around the eyes? After all, that’s where signs of ageing tend to develop first.
