the Same 5 Skincare Mistakes Every Day with Specialised Skincare the Ayurveda Way!
Easily preventable yet easy to overlook – if there was ever a phrase that could suitably capture the essence of all the surprisingly common mistakes we all make when it comes to skincare, it’s this.
Whether it’s overusing harsh exfoliators or sebum-stripping cleansers, or ’skincare sins’ such as forgetting, or even ignoring sunscreen or moisturiser altogether!
Mistakes like these can not only lead to acne, clogged pores, irritation, dullness and dryness, but can also contribute to premature ageing and damage the skin’s overall health.
And some of you may be thinking whether there’s any point to this at all, especially since you have been making these mistakes for several years if not decades already? Well, fear not. It's never too late to course-correct!
So, sit back, get comfy (ideally with a pot of herbal tea and some calming music) and learn how not to repeat these basic skincare mistakes ever again!
1. Stop overusing harsh cleansers or exfoliating products that strip down the skin barrier!
Instead of framing it in complex terms, let’s understand what the skin barrier is through this simple analogy:
Imagine a brick wall, with each individual skin cell as one brick. It is all held together by some sort of mortar – cement, or concrete or some combination thereof. This mortar that holds each individual cell in place is your skin barrier. It is made of nutritive compounds like ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol.
Now here are some common bad habits you may have picked up that damage it –
1. Excessive exfoliation
2. Over cleansing
3. Using products that don’t suit your skin type
All of us know how important it is to keep our skin clean and exfoliated. Yet there is such a thing as doing it too much. But how much is too much? Well, it depends on the kind of stressors – dirt, grime, smoke and other pollutants your skin gets routinely exposed to.
A great thumb rule is washing your face twice a day with gentle, non-stripping cleansers. We recommend going for the Nucinel Gentle Cleansing Fluid, it nourishes and softens skin while removing dirt, grime and light makeup; or if you prefer a gel-based wash, try the Nicumin Black Seed Brightening Face Cleansing Jelly.
As for exfoliating, once or twice a week is generally recommended.

2. Not sharing some of that love and care that you exclusively reserve for your face with your body!
Now, first off – Just like the changing of seasons, human life undergoes several natural phases. Our philosophy as a beauty and wellness brand considers ageing, or Jara (aka ’Vardhakya’), as a natural and beautiful aspect of life.
But it is premature ageing or even aggressive ageing that must be addressed. And, while there’s a plethora of information floating around on how to care for facial skin as we age, what often gets overlooked is what to do about premature or aggressive signs of ageing on the body.
Some common ones are as follows:
Dryness, or dehydrated skin; sagginess, or loss of elasticity; thinning, or loss of volume, and others. Regular body lotions are considered a skincare staple for good reason here. But most lotions and moisturisers bought off-the-shelf are sticky, gloopy and comedogenic - i.e. they block pores.
Thus, we recommend Balaayah Black Gram Body Booster, an age supporting, intensely moisturising body oil - which comes loaded with 8 potent Ayurvedic ingredients, including the unctuous Black Gram which offers instant, day-long, intense moisture + hydration for parched, ageing skin.
3. Not doing enough (or anything at all!) about the tired, droopy, & puffy skin around the eyes!
While we’d love it (and so would your skin!) if we didn‘t have to sit in front of bright, fluorescent screens for work all day, and had ample opportunity to spend time outdoors in nature instead of binge watching content on streaming services, but it‘s not always feasible or practical to pull the plug entirely.
Though what you can, and should do, is find a way to limit your screen time or make it less harmful. The harsh artificial blue light that emanates from all manner of screens, large or small, carries a range of detrimental effects – including accelerated ageing, skin darkening and not to mention disruption of the natural circadian rhythm.
As such, protecting your skin from artificial blue light is crucial. Always consider putting on sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF even if you do not have to step out at all during daytime.
Now, sure sunscreen offers protection for your skin from sun damage and harsh light in general but what do you do about the extra-delicate skin around the eyes? After all, that’s where signs of ageing tend to develop first.
Well, with the Ajara Sandalwood Rose Eye Butter, simply take 1 dab to soothe tender under eyes that routinely get exposed to harsh lighting conditions. Apply this golden emollient on the delicate undereye area to luxuriously nourish and moisturise dry & mature under-eye skin.
Or if you prefer more modern formats and want to look more awake and refreshed, try the Ajara Tulsi Mint Tonifying Gel. Just 1 pump of this gifts your eyes that minty-but-calming freshness of Tulsi, Mint & Aloe Vera & Liquorice, soothing those tired, puffy eyes, making them look more firmed and feel more even-toned.
4. Do you think that the products meant for your face can adequately address the needs of your sensitive neck + décolleté area? Think again!
Now most people would simply use a body moisturiser on their neck and décolleté and call it a day. But what they don't realise is that it is the opposite - the skin on our décolletage must be treated with specialised care as it is a more fragile extension of the face, not the body.
See for yourself! Just run your fingers down from your cheeks to your neckline and feel the difference in moisture, volume and elasticity. This is why premature wrinkling, erratic pigmentation and dehydration issues occur in this region first before others.
To apply skincare in this region, simply add a form of specialised décolletage care by going for something like the Yuavari Amplified Youth Spring, which packs potent Black Gram's firming action to smoothen the look of lines and wrinkles on the face, neck and décolleté.
Seriously, the hint is in the name! This literal youth spring adds juicy moisture to the skin, while tightening and toning the appearance of the signs of aggressive ageing in that area.
5. Using the wrong face massage medium + technique (or not doing it all!)
Assuming your sleep schedule is on point and you’re keeping nutrition & hydration in check, not massaging your face can probably explain why your skin might feel dull, bloated, or inflamed at mid-day or worse, upon waking up in the morning!
Better blood flow, glowing skin, regular drainage of lymphatic fluid – which is simply the excess fluid discarded by cells and tissues, the benefits of a gentle facial massage are numerous and all you need is a 10-minute session once, or at most twice a day.
BUT! There are some things to consider, like using unctuous, non-comedogenic mediums for evenly spreading out downward pressure while using correct circular movements.
Your fingers are well-suited to do this, but not a lot of beginners or even intermediates know how to employ the proper techniques (and there’s also the question of hygiene). And on the other hand, it‘s not always practical to seek out the help of an aesthetician.
So, using a purpose-built massage tool, like the Layuna Face Massager will come in handy! Made with the golden, historical metal Kansa (bronze), this convenient and easy-to-use wand moves deep into and underneath the contours of the face and around areas where you hold the most tension like the browline, the jawline etc.
Oh and let’s not forget, you should pair it with face oils like the iYURA Manjish Glow Elixir and Kesaradi Oil.
Manjish, or as we like to call it – Ayurveda’s Pink Power Potion, works like an overnight mask imparting a gold-like, glowing complexion in just 4 drops and 5 minutes of application before bedtime.
Whereas, with just 3 drops each morning of Kesaradi will brighten your look with a natural glow unlike any other face crème.
These two are among our bestselling skincare solutions for a reason! What’s more is that they come in a day-and-night bundle for your convenience!
Hope you found these helpful!
